MINERALS IN YOUR HOME
By Mackenzie M.
TOOTHPASTE
Toothpaste cleans your teeth with abrasives that rub the plaque away. Fluoride, coming from fluorite, can be used to reduce cavities. Sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, and sodium monofluorophosphate are all fluorine compounds added to toothpaste. Fluoride is added to not only toothpaste and mouthwashes, but also public drinking water to prevent tooth decay.
GLITTERY MAKEUP
Mica is a mineral used in glittery make-up. Its reflective and refractive properties make it an important ingredient in cosmetics including eyeliner, eyeshadow, body glitter, lipstick, and nail polish.
DEODORANT
Aluminum is used in deodorant in the form of aluminum chlorohydrate. Aluminum-based compounds in deodorant forms what is like a plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin's surface.
BABY POWDER
Baby powder is made with talc--the softest mineral on Mohs hardness scale. Talcum powder has the ability to absorb moisture, oils, and odors, reduce friction, and protect the skin, which is why it is used for baby powder.
SOAP
SOap can be made with multiple minerals including boron, feldspar, and iodine. These minerals fulfill soap's properties of killing bacteria on skin.
MIRROR
The reflective property of a mirror is usually made with one of the most common minerals--quartz. Not only does quartz come in handy for reflecting, but it is also used in the glass-making industry. Sands made entirely of quartz can be used to make multiple types of glass.
